Fred Brown scores a TD despite dropping the ball before reaching the end zone

Mississippi State WR Fred Brown pulled a “DeSean Jackson” during a huge win against Texas A&M, but the officials missed it and the Bulldogs got away with one.

One of my biggest pet peeves in all of sports is when a football player is about to score a touchdown and he drops the ball before crossing the goal line, costing his team 6 points and causing the player to look like a complete and utter jackass.

This is exactly what happened with Mississippi State WR Fred Brown, who made an incredible catch that resulted in a 52-yard TD to put the Bulldogs ahead of Texas A&M by a score of 41-17.

Fortunately for Brown, the referees didn’t notice that he dropped the ball a split second before actually crossing the goal line, meaning the football should have been a live ball and a Texas A&M player should have been able to recover it. At worst, it should have been a touchback for Texas A&M, giving them the ball in a much more manageable 34-17 situation.

Check out the evidence, thanks to Timothy Burke’s screen grab:

Brown clearly released the ball just before crossing the plane of the goal line. This one should have come back.

Also, if I were Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen, I would have benched Brown for the rest of the game.

This is the single most asinine celebration possible. We’ve seen it before, with DeSean Jackson costing his team a score. More recently, we saw Broncos LB Danny Trevathan do the same thing.

This needs to stop. It’s pointless, it looks stupid, and it’s a completely unnecessary risk. Brown got away with it this time, but next time he might not be so lucky.
