Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray leads the NFL in rushing by a significant margin, but team owner/general manager Jerry Jones is hoping to see the workhorse back splitting carries.

The Dallas Cowboys have had great success in 2014 thanks to their recent investments into the offensive line that has led to great success from starting running back DeMarco Murray.

However, Murray has been carrying the ball so much, that Jerry Jones is hoping to see the backfield split carries in an effort to avoid exposing Murray to injury.

Murray already has 90 carries this season and that is something that will take its toll on the running back’s body if he is asked to continue carrying the offensive load by himself.

For Jones, Lance Dunbar and Joseph Randle can provide some relief.

“If we can, it would be good to have Dunbar with a few more touches,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan, via the Dallas Morning News. “But make no mistake about it, Joseph Randle can be effective out there, too. We probably should have at least Randle get a few more snaps. I think he got seven the other day, and you probably could push that up if you’re going to have that many run plays, you probably could double that and be pretty smart about how you’re exposing Murray.”

Keeping Murray healthy is something that the Cowboys need to make a priority, so hopefully Jason Garrett and Bill Callahan are paying close attention to Jones’ advice.
