Neil Walker is one of the key players for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Could the team approach him about an extension this off-season?
The Pittsburgh Pirates have reached the playoffs for two consecutive seasons. Even with a disappointing loss to the San Francisco Giants in this year’s Wild Card game, the arrow is pointing up for the Pirates as they approach an intriguing off-season.

There are some important decisions for the Pirates. One issue could potentially have to do with one of Pittsburgh’s longest tenured players. Second baseman Neil Walker has been with the club since 2009 and has developed into one of the most important players for the franchise. Walker has two years left of arbitration on his deal, but could the Pirates consider signing him to an extension this winter?
Rob Biertempfel of Trib Live writes that the Pirates could look to extend Walker, especially if they fail to re-sign catcher Russell Martin:
"Through arbitration, Walker probably will make around $9 million next year and about $12 million in 2016. The qualifying offer amount in 2017 should be around $17 million. That brings the tab to $38 million for three years. So, four years and $54 million for Walker? Perhaps. There’s danger involved, as Walker has a cranky back and might eventually be moved to third base. But such a deal would lock up a homegrown, core player who appears to be in his peak production stage."
Neil Walker is coming off a season in which he batted .271/.342/.467 with 23 home runs and 76 RBI.
