Scott Shafer wanted to make the point that life as coach of the Syracuse Orange is good, despite a loss. He picked a less-than-tasteful way to do it.
Syracuse Orange coach Scott Shafer wanted to make the point that despite a loss Friday night to Louisville, life was pretty good.

He picked a really strange way to do it, basically saying that getting to coach football is pretty good while ISIS is out there chopping heads off people.
Dude … seriously?
"I’m the luckiest guy alive,” Shafer said. “I see ISIS is out there cutting people’s heads off. The real world has some major problems, major problems. … To me, life’s pretty damn good. I’m so lucky to be getting to field these kinds of questions.”"
Go to the 2:10 mark in the video to hear it as he said it. It’s … ummm … interesting.
So, OK, you get Shafer’s point, but it’s never really a good idea for a sports figure to make references to wars, real-life tragedies or anything else.
We live in far too sensitive an age, even if playing it safe makes the quotes a lot more bland.
But Shafer has a history of speaking without activating any sort of filter. In January, Shafer called the city of Atlanta soft after it was crippled by poor planning in reaction to an ice storm. Because, you know, the best way for a city to show how tough it is would be for drivers to throw caution to the wind and get those school buses out on roads that appear to have been freshly Zambonied, right?
Perhaps someone will get Shafer a nice gift this Christmas—either a social filter for his mouth … or a roll of duct tape for it.
