Each team earned a big (or at least what perceived to be big) road victory with Texas A&M blowing out the South Carolina Gamecocks in week one and Mississippi State going into Death Valley and taking down the LSU Tigers.
With quarterbacks Kenny Hill at Texas A&M and Dak Prescott at Mississippi State, a lot of fireworks were expected.
And there were plenty – they just most came from one. Prescott completed 19-of-25 passes for 259 yards with two touchdowns. He rushed for another 77 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries while Josh Robinson rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 48-31 victory.
Hill completed 37-of-62 passes for 365 yards and four touchdowns. However, two of touchdowns came in garbage time and he also threw three interceptions.
It took Texas A&M just 1:13 to march 69 yards on six plays, capped by a 13-yard touchdown toss from Hill to Josh Reynolds to put the Aggies up 7-0.
Not to be outdone, the Bulldogs got a 49-yard run by Robinson that set up his one-yard touchdown run two plays later. The Bulldogs were able to survive a muffed punt because a fourth down stop. After the teams traded punts, Robinson scored for the second time, this time from two yards out, to put the Bulldogs up 14-7.
After forcing another stop, the Bulldogs had their most impressive drive of the first half, marching 87 yards on 11 plays. Prescott scored from a yard out to push the lead to 21-7. Following a Bulldogs’ fumble, Hill dropped back to pass but was picked off by Richie Brown, setting the Bulldogs up at the Aggies’ 47. Eight plays later, Prescott found the end zone again, this time on a nine-yard pass to De’Runnya Wilson to make it 28-7.
Texas A&M managed a field goal just before the half to make it 28-10.
That, however, wasn’t nearly enough. Midway through the third quarter, Prescott struck again, this time scoring from two yards out. Hill quickly answered with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Speeedy Noil. It only took the Bulldogs five plays to answer themselves – Prescott found Fred Brown for a 51-yard touchdown, putting the Bulldogs up 41-17.
With 10:19 to go, Prescott only added to Texas A&M’s misery, when he rushed for an 11-yard score, his third touchdown of the day on the ground to put the game away.
Kenny Hill threw two more late touchdowns, a second to both Noil and Reynolds but it was too little, too late.
The Texas A&M Aggies will be back in action next week when they host the 11th-ranked Ole Miss Rebels. The Mississippi State Bulldogs will welcome in the fifth-ranked Auburn Tigers.
