Brett Hundley makes a pretty obvious statement about the rankings after loss to Utah

Last weekend Brett Hundley and the UCLA Bruins looked every bit as dominant against Arizona State as many thought they were be coming into this year. Seen by a lot of folks as one of the teams that could earn a spot in the College Football Playoff, they had validated those positive claims.

Well, and then Saturday happened.

Saturday night in the Rose Bowl, in one of the craziest Saturdays that we have seen in quite some time, UCLA became the final of the Top 10 teams to fall, losing in pretty dramatic fashion to the Utah Utes.

Now for as many people that claimed UCLA were legitimate contenders this season, there were also those that believe the Bruins and Brett Hundley were exposed at home on Saturday night. They had their share of detractors as well.

Following the game, while disappointed, Hundley did point out that despite whatever happens when the rankings come out on Sunday and how far they fall from their No. 8 spot, the only rankings that matter are the ones that come out in December.

“The rankings are the rankings, but they don’t matter until the end,” Hundley said Saturday night.

As far as the loss to Utah goes, well as we saw as things played out, the chances were there, and Brett Hundley knew that as well.

“Obviously there were a lot of opportunities for us,” Hundley said. “We didn’t get the job done, that’s really all that matters.”

Hundley is indeed right about the rankings. With the way that this season is going, there’s no telling how many of the teams that fell on Saturday could be right back up there in a few weeks, contending for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

A good start to that journey would be a win over Oregon this coming week.
