Arizona Cardinals star defensive end Calais Campbell is going to miss the next three-four weeks with a knee injury he sustained on an illegal chop block from Denver Broncos tight end Julius Thomas and Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians wants the NFL to do something about that.

Arians called the chop block the dirtiest play he’s seen in his time in the NFL and wants the NFL to come up with a new rule that would force a player who commits a penalty that results in a player being injured to miss as much time as the injured player as they recover from the injury.

This eye for an eye rule would be incredibly unlikely and unreasonable to enforce for a variety of reasons, but could you imagine a team signing a player off the street to take a run at the team’ star quarterback or running back and hit them with a cheap shot to knock them out?

A team would be losing a fringe roster player for one of their opponents best players in a trade-off they would gladly welcome.

Such rule would never happen, but it doesn’t mean Arians can’t be upset about losing another defensive starter to injury as Campbell is the team’s best defensive lineman and arguably their most important defender with all due respect to Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Peterson.

Campbell has 16 tackles, one sack and one interception this season and was coming off a career-high nine-sack season a year ago.
