The Carolina Hurricanes have already been crushed this preseason with the injury to Jordan Staal who broke his leg and will miss three-four months and now comes the crushing news that Jeff Skinner will be sidelined indefinitely with another concussion.

Skinner, 22 is a rising talent in the NHL and one of the few bright spots on the Hurricanes, and he could be out for a significant amount of time as he has missed time in the last two seasons for concussions.

The injury came in the team’s final preseason tune up before the regular season begins this week after he was struck by Washington Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen’s forearm as he followed through on a pass.

Here is the video of the hit courtesy of NHL.com.

Skinner was wobbly as he struggled to regain his feet after the hit from Niskanen who did not receive a penalty for the hit which left Skinner clearly concussed for the doctors watching on their televisions.

Carolina general manager Ron Francis released the following statement:

“Jeff has been diagnosed with a concussion,” said Francis. “He will continue to be monitored by our team doctors and go through proper protocols in the coming days.”

Concussions are difficult to pinpoint a timeline for recovery and considering his concussion history, it would not be surprising to see Skinner out for multiple weeks as he recovers from his latest concussion.

The former No. 7 overall pick had 33 goals and 54 points last season for the Hurricanes.
