Mississippi governor Phil Bryant made a pretty big announcement Monday as he officially named Oct. 4, 2014 as the statewide “Football Celebration Saturday.”

The announcement comes after both Ole Miss and Mississippi State had huge wins in their home state on Saturday and boosted both teams into the top five of the college football rankings. Now, the State of Mississippi will forever honor the day the two teams had big upset victories, calling the day “Football Celebration Saturday.”

Ole Miss ranked 11th going into Saturday’s home game against No. 3 Alabama and defeated Bama for the first time since 2003 when they won 23-17 after some fourth quarter heroics fueled the Rebels’ 13 unanswered points and they were able to upend the King of the SEC.

12th-ranked Mississippi State welcomed sixth-ranked Texas A&M and dominated a weak Aggie defense with a 48-31 dominating win led by quarterback Dax Prescott.

Both Mississippi teams found themselves tied for the No. 3 spot in the top-25 rankings this week, dominating the college football spotlight. The State of Mississippi definitely has something to celebrate. Ole Miss hasn’t won the SEC conference since 1963 and Mississippi State hasn’t won it since 1941. The two teams have some strong fan support and a governor making holidays in their honor.

The two teams square off Nov. 29, which is quickly becoming the most anticipated game of the college football season.
