Is the New England Patriots’ NFL dynasty over?

Picture yourself in the finest dining atmosphere there is to offer. There are hostesses dressed up in long beautiful dresses, waiters wearing tuxedos to serve and a live string quartet playing in the back for entertainment. The ambience is perfect, and as you are sitting at your table with the view side of the night sky, your server comes back with your entrée.

On your plate you have a smorgasbord of all of your favorite items in one dish. You are so excited to eat the food because of the amazing dining experience and all of a sudden you get a peculiar smell. The foods on the dish have a foul stench, and you instantly realize that the ingredients and foods on the plate are not fresh.

Up to date, this is how the New England Patriots season has turned out. The five-star dining experience is the five-star prestigious franchise that the Patriots are. The items that are all assorted together on the dish is the roster.

The foul and expired foods that compose the entree are all the terrible signings and acquisitions that the Patriots have brought along in the last few seasons. Don’t forget those violinists, they are the secret video assistants recording practices, and getting hand signs (just kidding).

Master Chef Head Coach Bill Belichick once was an excellent talent evaluator and still maybe one. Belichick had the sense for talent by just smelling, as if he had the nose of Remy from Ratatouille. He could sense if a player would work within his system and added in a whole bunch of parts that meshed with his Patriots culture. It worked and his food team was awesome for a while.

However, his nose for smelling talent looks like it has gone awry, and he is starting to look more like the rat from the movie The Witches.

In the last few years Belichick has made some questionable decisions that are wasting the remaining time that the Patriots will have with their starting quarterback Tom Brady. Not resigning Wes Welker was the first mistake. Then bringing in Danny Amendola to attempt to replace him so far has proved as an awful signing, drafting Aaron Dobson…the list could continue for a while.

Marshall Faulk said this on the pre game of the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night:

"“We have to look at him and say Bill Belichick has drafted awfully. Some of these guys that they’ve drafted, especially receivers to help Tom Brady, they’ve just not even come close to helping,” Faulk said. “When you think about the best two things that happened to Tom Brady: Randy Moss and Wes Welker. That’s it. They didn’t draft either of those guys.”"

In addition, having a shady offensive line doesn’t help either. The Patriots also traded Logan Mankins for Tim Wright and that is just in the last two years. Belichick has made some terrible transactions for a while now. As a result of Brady not having an offensive line, he is on pace to have one of his worst seasons as a professional. In the first five games of the season, Brady has ten sacks. Those sacks have resulted in Brady also losing five fumbles. All of last season Brady only had six. Ouch.

Before the beginning of the season if someone would’ve told me that the Patriots were going to have a 3-2 record and Brady would have one of his worst seasons as an NFL quarterback I might’ve believed it.

I saw the ending of the Patriots in the immediate future but not this soon. I even picked the Miami Dolphins to defeat them on opening week, but I never expected them at any point to the third best record in the AFC East (they were in third place once this season).

I know what you’re thinking as you’re reading this “You’re joking right, did you even see the Bengals game last night?” Yeah I saw it. I’m not ready to forget that Kansas City Chiefs thrashing yet either.

Commenting on their last game against the Cincinnati Bengals, there was no way the Patriots were losing that game. They were in the middle of a desperation game that would’ve left them with a 2-3 record and a bigger cause for panic. With that home crowd fired up at night, and an opportunity to let a playoff chance slip through their hands, the Patriots had way too much to lose.

Though I expected a loss, I knew this game the Patriots would attempt to show up and fight hard against the Cincinnati Bengals. They destroyed the Bengals and defeated them quite handily in a 43-17 win. This further illustrates that the Patriots aren’t going to have a sudden drop but a steady decline. Regardless of the lack of talent on the roster, it displayed that this team is not going down without a fight, and that is lovely to see.

That Bengals game was more of a blip and not a trend, but still a good win.

So far what I have seen is that the rest of the NFL has caught up to the Patriots, and they are steadily decelerating with consistency because of their apparent talent issues. As a Miami Dolphins fan, I am extremely happy that this time has come. As a bit of a Brady fan, it sucks his career is ending on this note (especially because he’s better than Peyton to me). It was a good moment to see him throw for 50,000 yards though.

Unrelated to the game, I will say this. I’m touched with the Patriots efforts to help Devon Still and his situation with his daughter. That was a class act. A lot of things are bigger than football and the Patriots helped show that tonight.

A very wonderful move during their impending end of their dynasty.
