The New York Jets got smacked around by the San Diego Chargers in Week 5, prompting linebacker Demario Davis to tell reporters in candid terms what he thought of himself and the rest of the team in that game and in the season leading to that 31-0 debacle.

“As a leader on defense, I take full responsibility for everything that happens defensively,” Davis said after the game, per ESPN.
The defense allowed Philip Rivers to have his way all game as the Chargers produced more than 400 yards of offense. The Jets dared Chargers to run and they responded by putting up 162 yards on the ground. While they attacked with the run, Rivers added nearly 300 yards of passing offense. The Jets had no chance and Davis blamed preparation.
“Right now, we’re not practicing like a championship football team.” he said, “I don’t see a lot of guys putting a lot of effort into film study.”
This comes on the heels of stories emerging that Geno Smith missed a meeting Saturday just 24 hours before this mauling in San Diego. The Jets may only be 1-4 in a tight but shallow AFC East, but that only makes things look worse for a talented team that shouldn’t look so bad against any opponent. If the team is really taking practice lightly, it’s hard to expect them to go anywhere when the plays matter.
