“I had to lose a lot of weight,” Rudy Gay said via Jason Jones of The Sacramento Bee. “I put on a lot of unnecessary weight. I feel good now. I feel lighter, I feel quicker.”
Rudy Gay, who was traded from the Toronto Raptors to the Kings in December, said he focused on putting on muscle through “heavy lifting” with the Rudy Raptors last summer.
“One of the emphasises coming into camp last year with Toronto was me playing the stretch four and putting on the weight was one of those things,” Rudy Gay said. “It didn’t turn out very well so I had to drop it. Now I feel like a guard again.”
That’s good news for the Kings, who talked Rudy Gay into not exercising his option to become a free agent over the summer.
Gay averaged 20.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 45.5% from the field, 33.0% from beyond the arc and 82.2% from the free throw line last season. Rudy Gay has put up 18.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 45.1% from the field, 34.2% from three and 78.4% from the charity stripe in his eight-year career.
