Courtois looked to be knocked unconscious after a heaving collision with Arsenal player Alexis Sanchez. The Belgian keeper looked dazed and received medical attention, but tried to continue.
It was to no avail, as Chelsea were forced to bring on Petr Cech as a replacement for Courtois, who noticed that blood was coming from his ear. He was taken to hospital for checks, but the London club confirmed today that he has not suffered any lasting damage:
"Chelsea Football Club can confirm Thibaut Courtois went to hospital during our Premier League game against Arsenal yesterday [Sunday] for precautionary tests on a head injury. Those tests came back all clear.Thibaut was treated for a minor cut to his ear and was released from hospital last night. He is expected to report for international duty later this week. – Chelsea FC Official Statement"
It will be a relief to hear this positive news for Chelsea fans, with goalkeeper Petr Cech wearing a protective helmet in every game having suffered from a compressed skull in 2006. In a collision with the knee of Wigan player Shane Long, Cech’s career was put in major doubt. Carlo Cudicini, Cech’s replacement on the day, also went off suffering concussion. It left Chelsea with having to field Jhn Terry in goal for the final minutes of the match.
Courtois has proven himself to be one of the best keepers in the world in recent years. Despite only being 22 years old, he excelled on a 3 year loan spell with Atletico Madrid. On his return to Chelsea he was trusted with the starting spot ahead of Cech and will have been concerned that this injury would jeopardize his place in the team.
