The Jersey City (NJ) St. Peter’s Prep signal caller took an official visit to South Bend last weekend and watched the sixth-ranked Fighting Irish’s last-minute win over Stanford on the sidelines. The weekend was more than enough to convince Scout.com’s 11th-ranked quarterback to reverse course.
“Brandon Wimbush has officially decommitted from Penn State and has committed to Notre Dame,” said St. Peter’s Prep coach Rich Hansen told Scout.com’s Brian Dohn, who first broke the story. “He took the visit to clarify things in his mind, and I’m glad the trip was fruitful for him. If he had come back and felt stronger about Penn State, then that would have been great.”
Wimbush (6-1, 212 pounds) originally made his commitment to Penn State during the spring. He did take a visit to Stanford during the summer and returned still focused on attending Penn State.
The Fighting Irish got into the picture for Wimbush when they lost the commitment of five-star quarterback Blake Barnett, who shunned them in favor of Alabama, to whom he made a verbal commitment to in June. Wimbush’s family did make the trip to the Stanford game with him, and — along with his coaches — helped him make the decision to become the latest recruit for Notre Dame, which entered the week with the 12th-best recruiting class according to Scout.com
