The Cleveland Cavaliers will likely wait until after the season to re-sign big man Tristan Thompson instead of signing him to a contract extension before the October 31 deadline.

The Cleveland Cavaliers had a very busy offseason.

After winning the NBA’s Draft Lottery and made Andrew Wiggins the number one overall pick, LeBron James decided to leave the Miami Heat in favor of a return to his home state and first NBA team. They then used Wiggins and last year’s number one pick, Anthony Bennett to acquire Kevin Lvoe from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Before James or Love became members of the Cavaliers, they signed point guard Kyrie Irving to a five-year max contract.

The Cavaliers used the number one overall pick of the first round in the 2011 NBA Draft to select Irving but also had the fourth-overall pick of the first round that year. They used that selection on raw but talented big man Tristan Thompson.

Like Irving, Tristan Thompson is also due an extension and if he doesn’t get one before the deadline of October 31, he will be a restricted free agent after the season. There have been reports the two sides haven’t had much discussion but there are also rumors that LeBron James wants Tristan Thompson ins Cleveland long term. Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders believes the Cleveland Cavaliers will wait until the offseason to address Tristan Thompson’s status.

That’s probably the best play. The Cavaliers’ can assess his value playing with this core and they hold his bird rights so they can ultimately decide whether or not to keep him.

Tristan Thompson averaged 11.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game while shooting 47.7% from the field and 69.3% from the free throw line. In his three-year career, he’s put up 10.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game while shooting 47.3% from the field and 63.0% from the free throw line.
