Denver Post suspends Colorado Avalanche beat writer

As of Tuesday afternoon, it seems that the Denver Post has suspended its Colorado Avalanche beat writer for inappropriate word usage on Twitter:

"The suspension, effective immediately, followed a number of exchanges with users on Oct. 4 and 5.“Journalists need to recognize that they need to be professional on all platforms. Social media is no different,” Post Editor Gregory L. Moore said. “The language Adrian used is unacceptable, and he knows it.”"

The tweets have since been deleted, and Dater has tweeted out an apology for his temper getting the best of him.

The apology suggests that Dater has taken a step in the right direction, but the truly commendable behavior award goes to the Denver Post.

Journalism has started to become more murky in recent years, as the blogosphere and explosion of social media have made the line between ‘journalism’ and ‘published personal opinion’ harder to define. As a result, this isn’t the first instance of a paid professional losing his head in a public setting- and it most likely won’t be the last.

Excuses cannot be made for this kind of behavior, though. Having a journalist attack a reader, whether provoked or not, is never acceptable. And the language he used to do it? Well, I like my job- but The Hockey Writers’ Hannah Stuart had something to say about it:

Stuart’s comment that she would have ‘preferred longer’ refers to the length of the suspension; according to the Denver Post, Dater will be suspended without pay for two weeks.
