Evan Turner and Kelly Olynyk talk favorite animals, how Turner got “Turtle” nickname

Has Evan Turner tipped his hand when it comes to his next NBA destination by revealing his favorite animal? Did anyone know that Turner’s nickname is “Turtle”? Is Kelly Olynyk making a philosophical statement by differentiating between the animal he wants to be and his favorite animal?

We all have questions. The Boston Celtics have the answers.

A quick synopsis, for those at work or otherwise unable or unwilling to watch a video that lasts 66 seconds:

  • Olynyk is asked to identify something he’s learned about Evan Turner since Turner joined the Celtics. Olynyk misinterprets the question, wondering if the reporter is looking for a fun fact, like that Turner’s favorite animal is a turtle. The reporter clarifies, but the cat’s out of the bag, and we’re talking favorite animals now.
  • Pondering the infinite majesty of the animal kingdom, Olynyk seems lost in thought regarding his favorite animal. Reminded that he previously identified a shark as his favorite, Olynyk quickly parries — he’d most like to be a shark, but that’s not necessarily his favorite animal, which would probably be “a lemur or something.”
  • Cut to Turner, who explains the whole “Turtle” thing. It’s not his favorite animal, you see; that was his nickname back in the day. Its origin? Well, children are cruel; Turner had a small head as a kid; “Turner” kind of sounds like “Turtle.” Isn’t it clever?
  • As for his favorite animal, Turner’s going with a hawk….or did he mean a Hawk? AN ATLANTA HAWK?!
