Last year behind a new coach, Steve Clifford, an improving former first round pick, point guard Kemba Walker and the free agent signing of an all-star, big man Al Jefferson, the Charlotte Hornets (then-Bobcats) were one of the league’s most improved teams, finishing 43-39. They finally returned to the playoffs where they defeated by the eventual Eastern Conference Champion Miami Heat in a four-game sweep. However, their success gave them optimism for the future.
That’s why they were very busy in free agency. They signed Utah Jazz swingman Gordon Hayward to a massive offer sheet but the Jazz decided to match. Then, they turned their attention to Indiana Pacers’ guard Lance Stephenson, bringing the troubled but talented guard in on a three-year deal.
The Hornets obviously want to be a player in the Eastern Conference for some time. That will mean locking down a few of those players. Al Jefferson can become a free agent by opting out of his deal after this season. He almost certainly will in order to get a long-term contract. Kemba Walker will be a restricted free agent if he isn’t extended by October 31.
According to Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders, Walker should get a deal worth between $40 and $45 million over four years. That would be a nice deal for both sides and the Hornets would still have the flexibility to make a few other moves and lock up Al Jefferson.
Kemba Walker put up 17.7 points, 6.1 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 39.3% from the floor, 33.3% from beyond the arc and 83.7% from the free throw line last season. Kemba Walker has put up 16.0 points, 5.5 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 39.8% from the field, 32.2% from three and 81.0% from the charity stripe.
