Mike Pouncey needs to find a place on the Miami Dolphins offensive line, and that may see him slide over to guard.

The Miami Dolphins will get a boost along their offensive line when center Mike Pouncey returns from hip surgery in the near future. Whenever he does return though, he may not actually be the team’s starting center. With Samson Satele playing strong at center and Pouncey having a stronger history as a guard, the Dolphins could very well decide to line up Pouncey as a right guard — a first for his NFL career.

Pouncey, to his credit, seemed unfazed by the speculation. “Guard’s my position,” he told the Miami Herald. “I was kind of forced to play center when I got drafted. Guard’s been the position I’ve played my whole life. … Whatever position I’m playing, I’ll help the team. It’s coach [Joe] Philbin’s decision.”

Pouncey lined up as a guard for his first three years as a Florida Gator before being moved to center in his senior season. He was then drafted as a center and the rest was history. Now it appears that history might rewrite itself for Pouncey as he slots in on a banged-up offensive line. “They’re going to put the best five guys on the field to help this team win,” Pouncey said, deferring any preference of position to the coaching staff.

Satele meanwhile was just as nonchalant in reference to his role on the offensive line. He understands his place on the team and simply wants to make his mark while he’s still getting reps.

“I knew I would play the first four games as well as I could until Mike came back and make it as hard a decision as I could for them,” Satele said. “When I signed here, I knew what I was signing [up for]. It’s not stressful.”
