The Washington Redskins don’t expect Robert Griffin III back in the near future.

The Washington Redskins don’t know (or at least won’t say) exactly when Robert Griffin III will be ready to play, but one shouldn’t hold their breath waiting for Robert Griffin III’s return.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden revealed Tuesday that Robert Griffin won’t be back in the near future to the Washington Post.

"“I don’t envision that any time soon,” Gruden told reporters during a conference call, asked about the timetable for Griffin’s return.(…)Gruden also dismissed a suggestion that Griffin might join the 1-4 team for practice in the near term, saying that the next step would likely be to increase his work load on a treadmill under the team trainer’s supervision.“Maybe we’ll get him out here when the time is right,” Gruden said, declining even a cursory stab at a timetable."

Robert Griffin dislocated his left ankle during the Redskins’ Week 2 game versus the Jacksonville Jaguars.

While many thought backup quarterback Kirk Cousins would play well enough to steal Robert Griffin’s job in his absence, the fact of the matter is that the Redskins could really use a healthy Robert Griffin right now. Washington has gone 0-3 with Cousins starting and the Michigan State product had a five-turnover game in Week 4.

The Redskins selected Robert Griffin with the No. 2 pick of the 2012 NFL Draft. Griffin won Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2012, but injuries have stalled his career. Still, Robert Griffin has the type of star potential that Washington needs at the moment.
