A small protest in support of Ferguson, Mo., shooting victim Mike Brown at Busch Stadium got ugly Monday night.
St. Louis Cardinals fans clashed with protesters seeking to have Ferguson, Mo., police officer Darren Wilson prosecuted for the shooting death in August of teenager Mike Brown.
It was not a pretty sight.
A video was posted on Argus Streaming News on Livestream and shared by Deadspin had numerous examples of Cardinals fans being, shall we say, less than sensitive to the points being made by the protesters.
One had to be particularly impressed with the stereotypical old white guy telling the protesters that they needed to get jobs. Because if they had jobs, the protesters wouldn’t be at a baseball game … well after normal business hours … to annoy the old guy with their silly socialist ideas such as thinking that police officers shouldn’t gun down unarmed citizens and other crazy notions.
The fans chanting “Let’s go, Darren!” was a particularly tasteless touch, as well.
The video continues for several minutes and pretty much devolves into a “Who’s Who Of Misinformation” instructional piece.
There was the woman who yells at the protesters that, “We’re the ones who have y’all the freedoms that you have!”
Here’s a hint for other pigmentally challenged folks out there: If you are white, telling blacks that you gave them their freedom is probably not a line you want to cross. You know, because of that whole, our proud forefathers used to own their proud forefathers … thing.
There was the chanting of “Africa!” at the protesters and, because no gathering of different American subcultures would be complete without a great display of understanding, a white fan tells the protesters they need to take off their hats and pull up their pants.
Rodney King infamously asked more than two decades ago, “Can’t we all just get along?” Based on this video, the answer continues to be an emphatic “no.”
