The Carolina Panthers have a franchise quarterback in Cam Newton, but his contract is coming up for renewal and that could become a messy situation.

Cam Newton is one of the fastest rising names in the NFL as he led the Carolina Panthers out of obscurity and into the playoffs last season. He’s on a roll again this year, as he’s fresh off a comeback win over the Chicago Bears and looking to further improve his brand.

More from Carolina Panthers

The multimillion question is how much will Newton cost the Panthers when his contract come up for official renewal? Colin Kaepernick was the latest quarterback to get a fat new deal, and it’s something that Newton’s camp will no doubt cite.

That being said, the Panthers seem hardly concerned with Newton’s contract becoming an issue. Head coach Ron Rivera was level-headed when asked about a pending deal, noting how important Newton is to Carolina.

That doesn’t mean Carolina will fork over whatever Newton wants, but it shows early on that the Panthers want to make something work. The team was cash strapped in 2013 and failed to give a long term deal to Greg Hardy — which at the time wasn’t marred in his psychotic domestic abuse scandal.

Newton will get paid, that’s for sure, and it’s pretty likely that at the end of the day it’s Carolina who pays him.
