The college football national championship scene is changing this year, with the inaugural season of the college football playoff. Four teams will get chosen to participate in the small tournament for college football’s biggest prize but there are no guarantees that a particular conference will be represented.

That means a power conference like the Big Ten could ultimately be left out of the playoff for the national championship. Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio isn’t too worried about it though, and thinks that his team’s record and their conference affiliation will help them get in.

Why? Because the Big Ten’s television appeal.

“If we do what we’re supposed to do or what we’re attempting to do and get in the [Big Ten championship game] and win that game, then I think good things are possible,” Dantonio said to the Detroit Free Press. “I think we turn on a lot of TV sets, and let’s not be naïve. It’s about who is watching the game, too. And so you’ve got a quarter of the country watching a football game. They want to see a football team from this part of the country in that game.”

Right now it isn’t unrealistic to think Michigan State could end up in the playoff. They’re ranked No. 8 in the country, though they do have a loss on their record. Climbing back into the picture could depend on some teams ahead of them stumbling down the stretch.

The lone one-loss team head of Michigan State is Alabama, who still have an Iron Bowl match up later this season against the currently undefeated Auburn Tigers.
