Ask anyone about the Houston Rockets off-season and they’ll tell you it didn’t go well. While they retained their core in Dwight Howard and James Harden, the rest of the roster underwent construction: they basically swapped Chandler Parsons for Trevor Aria and traded Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik for no real value.
For a team that lacked depth last season, those aren’t positive moves, but with the salary cap expected to take a ‘significant’ rise next summer, the Houston Rockets may find themselves back as suitors in free agency. According to ESPN, Rajon Rondo, Goran Dragic or any good point guard will be on their radar.
"The Rockets are widely expected to take a step back this season, thanks to all the depth they squandered on the Bosh dice roll, but they expect to have significant salary-cap room next summer — when they can chase point guards as accomplished as Goran Dragic and Rajon Rondo if they choose — as well as in the summer of 2016."
The interest from the Houston Rockets in regards to Dragic, Rondo, or any other top-name point guard in free agency is inevitable as they continue their quest to add a third star/superstar, but if this summer has shown us anything, there aren’t any guarantees. If they were, we’d be talking about how Dwight Howard, Chris Bosh, and James Harden as one of the best trios in the NBA.
Instead we’re talking about the Houston Rockets’ free agent interest a summer or two ahead. With Dragic or Rondo, the Rockets would rise in the West as they lack a creator and playmaker in the backcourt to go alongside Harden — Patrick Beverly fits more of a 3-and-D role
Houston Rockets’ general manager Daryl Morey is a progressive guy, so it’s going to be interesting to see how he handles things going forward. If he can get his hands on Dragic or Rondo, what happened this summer will be a thing of the past.
