Once the SEC handed down a fine of $50,000 to Mississippi for their fans storming the field when the Rebels upset the Alabama Crimson Tide 23-17 on Saturday, the university sprang into action. They asked for donations.
The school did say that they were happy to pay the fine, but that many people were wondering how to give to the cause.

Don’t worry, your hard earned money went to good use. You got something in return for your donation.
For a $5 donation, you got a personal thank you letter from Athletic Director Ross Bjork. For $25, you got an exclusive image to use as your desktop background on your computer(s). For $250, you get a commemorative print from the game. For $500, fans got a 3″ section of the goalposts that took a tour of Oxford and wound up in someone’s apartment. For $1,000, you got a 6″ section of the goalpost. Somehow the university managed to recover an 18 foot section of one of the goalposts which was hacked up for the fundraiser. No word on if it was the one carried around town or not.
A brilliant fundraiser, I must say. What fan wouldn’t want a piece of perhaps the biggest win the city and the university has ever seen?
The fine levied by the SEC is nothing unusual. The conference fines all schools for fans rushing the field or the court.
This resulted in $94,000 raised by 9 am Wednesday morning, far surpassing the goal of $75,000. In fact, the $75,000 goal was met in just four hours! The SEC fine was “only” $50,000, but the cost of erecting new goalposts was expected to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $22,000.
The fundraiser is scheduled to end on October 29th. There is no word yet on what will be done with the remainder of the money raised. Maybe they can save it for the next time the fans rush the field. Perhaps on November 1st against the Auburn Tigers?
