It’s not uncommon for an NFL player’s toughness to be called into question for missing a game with an injury.

What is uncommon is for an NFL player to be regarded as tough solely because they missed a game. Well, that’s what happened with Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

The Vikings rookie missed the team’s Week 5 contest against the Green Bay Packers due to a sprained ankle and teammate Greg Jennings has labeled Bridgewater as tough for doing so.

From Fox Sports:

"“You have to respect him because a lot of young guys would go out there and try to do it just because, peer pressure, if you will, or just showing toughness,” wide receiver Greg Jennings said. “But toughness isn’t always shown by what you can do physically. It’s mental toughness too and he definitely has it.”"

It’s not hard to see where Jennings is coming from, though, at the same time, it is a strange take on the subject, given the culture of the NFL.

Bridgewater is expected to play for Minnesota this weekend, as they face the Detroit Lions.

"“Fine, good,” head coach Mike Zimmer said of how Bridgewater has looked this week. “No concern.”"

The Vikings drafted Bridgewater with the first round’s final pick of the 2014 NFL Draft. He has thrown for 467 yards without a touchdown or an interception this season. He has also rushed for 54 yards and a score.
