The Warriors are obviously serious about locking down Klay Thompson after reportedly refusing to include him in a potential deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves that would have netted them Kevin Love. However, the two sides are reportedly $2 million apart annually – Klay Thompson is looking for a five-year deal worth $15 million per from the Warriors, which is apparently what the Timberwolves were willing to pay.
According to Monte Poole of CSN Bay Area, the Timberwolves were prepared to give Klay Thompson a max contract.
"Then there is this: League sources are adamant in saying Timberwolves boss Flip Saunders was prepared to give Thompson a max deal if Minny were to pry Klay away from the Warriors as part of a deal for power forward Kevin Love. The Warriors balked at including Thompson in such a deal. Executive board member Jerry West and rookie head coach Steve Kerr were most responsible for the balking."
Depending on what they do with Ricky Rubio (plus J.J. Barea and Kevin Martin) and if Chase Budinger and Corey Brewer pick up their options, the Timberwolves could have some many to play with next year.
Klay Thompson averaged 18.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 44.4% from the field, 41.7% from beyond the arc and 79.5% from the charity stripe. In his three-year career, Klay Thompson has gone for 16.0 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 43.5% from the floor, 41.0% from three and 82.7% from the charity stripe.
