Klay Thompson and the Golden Warriors are ‘millions apart’ on a contract extension
October 31. To the regular world, this is a time to celebrate Halloween, but for NBA teams with young, promising players, it’s the deadline for clubs to sign extensions for players drafted in the 2011 NBA Draft before they have to hash things out in free agency.

One team working hard to get a deal done is the Golden State Warriors as they hope to extend stud shooting guard Klay Thompson. Despite the two sides being eager to get a deal done, Monte Poole of CSNBayArea.com says they are a couple million dollars apart.
"The Warriors have 22 days to preemptively deliver a contract extension that will keep Klay Thompson with the franchise for at least another five years. But there has been no movement in recent weeks. As of Thursday morning, the sides remain $2-3 million a year apart, according to NBA sources. The dithering seems pointless when all parties consistently state their desire for a deal. The Warriors want it. Thompson wants it. His teammates want it. And there is no indication Klay’s agent, Bill Duffy, has lost the optimism he expressed last month."
Translation: Klay Thompson and his camp are pushing for a max contract while the Warriors want to sign him for slightly less. Opinions on Thompson vary in regards to him being worth the rookie-max deal, but a summer after seeing Chandler Parsons and Gordon Hayward receive max offers from the Dallas Mavericks and Charlotte Hornets and Thompson being withheld from Kevin Love trade talks, it’s hard to see how the Warriors woukd justify not being all-in on a max contract for Klay Thompson.
If the two sides don’t agree to a deal before the deadline, it’s all but a given that someone, if not the Warriors, will present Klay Thompson with a max contract offer once he hits the open market as a restricted free agent. Maybe then, the Warriors will bite the bullet and sign for the max, but until then, they’ll try and sign him for a little less than the ~$15 million rookie max.
This past off-season, Thompson played a key role in Team USA winning gold at the 2014 FIBA World Championships.
