Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott released a statement on his appreciation for Corrente and his time in the Pac-12.
"“Under Tony’s leadership, our program made great strides in improving the quality, accountability and consistency. While it’s unfortunate that Tony has decided to leave us at this time, I want to express my appreciation for his contribution, and for leaving our officiating program strong and headed in the right direction.”"
The resignation comes after a tough week for Pac-12 officials who have been the base of criticism following a series of high-profile, questionable calls and non-calls in several games. Colorado coach Mike MacIntyre was seen screaming at officials and following them off the field following the Buffaloes’ 36-31 loss to Oregon State. That action got MacIntyre a $10,000 fine and a reprimand from the league earlier this week.
Jim Blackwood, who has more than 20 years as a college conference coordinator and 10 years as an NFL replay official, will serve as interim coordinator for the remainder of the season. He previously served as the instant replay supervisor under Corrente.
Corrente had been the coordinator of officials since 2011.
It’s a big year for the Pac-12 and not a time for officials to be deciding games. The Pac-12 has five top-25 teams with a few just outside of the rankings. Tough conference opponents have caused Oregon to lose to Arizona and Stanford and USC to lose twice already. Arizona now leads the conference with a record of 5-0. We’ll see how the situation with the officials plays out and hopefully they’ll begin to play less of a role in deciding the outcome of games.
