Green Bay Packers’ wide receiver Davante Adams is looking to make early statement

The Green Bay Packers selected former Fresno State wide receiver Davante Adams in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. They believed he could make an impact right away if need be. However, they didn’t think that Jarrett Boykin would go down with an injury and force the rookie into a very important role in the first few games of the season. Davante Adams has taken the third wide receiver role and run with it, and has been showing the type of potential that he has for the future.

Davante Adams talked to PackersNews.com about the expectations and how he has been looking to make an impact early on in his Packers’ career.

“You’re not going to draft somebody in the second round for them to sit on the backburner; they’re expecting you to come in and contribute right away. If they have confidence in me to bring me in here and the type of receivers they have, especially the type of receivers they’ve gotten in the second round – that means a lot to me. I have to go out there and prove to them and show the world why they brought me here.”

“Of course, I’m a rookie in the books, but at the same time you can’t make those rookie mistakes being a pro here. You have to live up to a certain level of play that everyone has been doing around here for a long time. Jordy and Randall both came in making statements early, so I feel like why can’t I?”

That type of confidence and determination from a rookie wide receiver is always fun to see, and he has everything that it will take to become a force in the future. Aaron Rodgers has enjoyed throwing to his rookie wide receiver and there is already a connection between the two. Davante Adams may never be a “star” in the NFL, but he has that type of potential if he continues working hard and improving at the rate that he has been.

Through his first five games with the Packers, Davante Adams has caught 10 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown. Those aren’t huge numbers, but he has been getting more involved each and every week with the offense. He still has quite a bit to learn before he’s able to make as big of an impact as he can, but both Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb have been mentoring him and helping him along.

At the age of 21, the future is extremely bright for Davante Adams in Green Bay. Boykin’s injury came as a shock, but Davante Adams now has the potential to win the third wide receiver job away from him for the remainder of the season. It will be very intriguing to see how he plays over the next couple of weeks and what decision head coach Mike McCarthy makes when Boykin returns to action.
