Charlie Whitehurst will get the nod for the Tennessee Titans on Sunday

With starting quarterback Jake Locker unable to practice all week due to his right thumb injury, the Titans will turn to Charlie Whitehurst to start as Tennessee welcomes Jacksonville on Sunday.

Locker sustained the injury during last Sunday’s loss to the Browns. Sunday will mark the second time this season that Locker, who will become an unrestricted free agent after this season, will miss a start. He had previously missed the Titans’ 41-17 loss to the Colts on September 28. Locker did attempt some throws during Friday’s practice, yet was unable to generate any velocity.

The Titans officially listed Locker as questionable for this week’s injury report.

Whitehurst has completed 57 percent of his passes for 371 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. The game will mark just the sixth career start for the ninth-year veteran, who also made four starts with the Seahawks in 2010-2011.

After replacing Locker last week, Whitehurst threw touchdown passes to Kendall Wright and Justin Hunter in his first three attempts. He completed 11 of 18 passes in the second half, yet was unable to lead Tennessee to a score.

There had been speculation that the Titans would turn to rookie Zach Mettenberger by midseason. The sixth-rounder from LSU completed two of his five passes for 17 yards and an interception in his pro debut when he replaced Whitehurst late in the loss to the Colts. Mettenberger threw two touchdowns and completed 69 percent of his passes during the preseason, yet also threw a pair of interceptions and lost three fumbles.

Mettenberger, who was a healthy scratch last week, will suit up as the backup to Whitehurst.
