The Orlando Magic made it a mission to improve defensively, which is why they selected former Arizona Wildcats’ forward Aaron Gordon with the fourth-overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.

Gordon is a very talented but raw prospect and many believe it may be a while before he contributes on offense. That, however, has not stopped Gordon from impressing head coach Jacque Vaughn.

“An extremely bright young man,” Vaughn said via Josh Robinson of The Orlando Sentinel. “[He] cares about the game [and] loves playing the game of basketball. Wants to be as great as he can be, and we’re going to try to push him to get there. He wants everything right now, but so does every rookie. He’ll continue to learn and go step-by-step and grow with us.”

Vaughn, as expected, has been especially impressed by Gordon’s defense.

“He was really good defensively,” Vaughn said. “I think early on the fouls that he got were just [from] being a little late in his footwork and in his preparation of the play. That’ll get you into trouble. The game is too fast to be late. He’s a guy that will go to the bench, though, and watch the game and see how the game is being played and make adjustments. He did that the second half.”

It will be interesting to see what kind of impact Gordon can make in his rookie season – on both ends of the court.

Gordon averaged 12.1 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game while shooting 49.5% from the field, 35.6% from beyond the arc and 42.2% from the free throw line for the Wildcats last season.
