In July, the NBA’s best player, LeBron James, decided to leave the Miami Heat in favor of a return to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
James was drafted by the Cavaliers with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 NBA and spent the first seven years of his career there. In 2010, James decided he needed to leave Cleveland in order to win a title and he joined the Miami Heat, teaming with Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade to form the new Big Three. The trio led the Heat to four Eastern Conference Titles and two NBA titles in four seasons.
After James left the Heat, president Pat Riley acted quickly, re-signing both Wade and Bosh, among others. He also landed Josh McRoberts, Danny Granger and perhaps most importantly, Luol Deng. Deng will take the place of James in the starting.
The Cavaliers were as busy. They dealt the last two number one overall picks, swingman Andrew Wiggins (2014) and forward Anthony Bennett (2013) to acquire star power forward Kevin Love in a three-way deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Philadelphia 76ers. James and Love will team with All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, who received a contract extension in the offseason, to former their own Big Three.
On Saturday, the Heat and Cavaliers will do battle in Brazil.
