The Colorado Avalanche aren’t the only team who struggled in their season opener, but they may have been the team that struggled most.

The Los Angeles Kings are the only other team to be shutout in the 2014-2015 season, falling 4-0 to the San Jose Sharks and the Arizona Coyotes fell to the Winnipeg Jets 6-2 in their own arena Thursday night. The Avalanche, on the other hand, were shut out 5-0 by the Minnesota Wild- and were outshot 48 – 16.

The Avalanche were outmaneuvered both offensively and defensively, as their small army of forward superstars were unable to make their way on the scoreboard and their defense were unable to prevent netminder Semyon Varlamov from being peppered with almost fifty shots throughout the game.

It seems that head Coach Patrick Roy has very little tolerance for these kinds of issues this early in the season, though, and has already announced multiple line-up changes that will happen before the next game. He claims that there was ‘no issue with line chemistry and instead cites his reasoning for making the changes as being a wake-up call for the players who failed to perform as expected of them.

  • Defenseman Nate Guenin will be a healthy scratch in the next game for his minus-one rating, and will be replaced in the lineup by Ryan Wilson
  • Forward Nathan Mackinnon has been relegated to the second line, where he will be shifted back to center. In his stead on the left wing, top-line forwards Matt Duchene and Jarome Iginla will be joined by Ryan O’Reilly.

The team will play next on Saturday, as they face off against the Wild for an almost immediate rematch.
