Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota put the Ducks on the board first, rushing for a 13-yard score with 4:47 remaining in the opening quarter. The ensuing two-point conversion gave Oregon an 8-0 lead.
Mariota added two more scores in the second quarter, both of which came through the air. Mariota hit Thomas Tyner for a 21-yard touchdown and Pharaoh Brown for a 31-yard score. A missed extra point after Brown’s touchdown negated the value of the first quarter two-point conversion.
UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley rushed for a 16-yard score three seconds before the halftime break to cut the deficit to 21-10.
However, Mariota would push Oregon’s lead to 28-10 with 9:06 left in the third quarter on a crazy play. Mariota fumbled on a designed run, but was able to pick it up and run in for a 20-yard touchdown.
Oregon running back Royce Freeman ran for a 4-yard score in the third and a 2-yard score early in the fourth to make it 42-10.
But UCLA didn’t give up.
A Hundley 5-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Payton, a Nate Starks 9-yard touchdown run and another 25-yard score from Hundley to Payton made it 42-30 with 2:47 to go. Ultimately, Oregon was able to hold the Bruins off and come away with the victory.
Mariota finished the game 17-27 for 200 yards and two passing touchdowns. He also posted 75 yards on the ground and two rushing scores. Freeman was the team’s top rusher, posting 121 yards. Brown led the way in the receiving-wise, catching five passes for 84 yards and a score.
On the other side, Hundley was 26-37 for 216 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. UCLA running back Paul Perkins posted 187 rushing yards and Payton had 61 receiving yards.
Oregon will hope to keep the good times going next Saturday against Washington at home. UCLA will take on Cal next Saturday on the road.
