Randall Cobb is set to be a free agent at season’s end. Is it possible that he and the Green Bay Packers could start talking about a contract extension during the season?

The Green Bay Packers have a killer duo of wide receivers in Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. In order to deploy both of those weapons in the 2015 season, the team will have to re-sign Cobb, who will hit free agency at season’s end.

From the Packers’ perspective, one imagines that the ideal path to take would be a mid-season extension before Cobb ever gets to test the market. That is something they can pitch to Cobb as a way to achieve peace of mind, not to mention the opportunity to ensure that he keeps catching passes from Aaron Rodgers.

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com, there has not been a lot of progress in talks about a Cobb extension, but he believes that the two sides have at least had initial talks about a deal.

"Maybe it’s Randall Cobb who wants to wait until the season is over, or at least wait until he has more bargaining power. Remember this summer when he said he had not done enough to warrant a new deal? What Cobb surely meant was he had not done enough to get the kind of money he wants…It’s likely there already have been preliminary talks between the Packers and Cobb’s agent, Jimmy Sexton."

The Packers won’t want to overpay, of course, but presuming Cobb stays healthy and productive for the remainder of the season, they should have plenty of incentive to lock him up at the end of year, if not sooner than that.

Through five games this season, Cobb has 24 catches for 273 yards and six touchdowns.
