The Red River Rivalry was not the biggest game that the Big 12 conference has to offer. Instead, it was No. 9 TCU who traveled to No. 5 Baylor to take on the Bears in McLane Stadium for one of college football’s most exciting match ups of the season. Both teams came in undefeated into this game with major playoff implications and it was Baylor winning 61-28 and remaining at the top of the Big 12 after they were able to score 24 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and win on a 28-yard field goal.

The game took over four hours and TCU led by 21 points with just over 11 minutes to go in the fourth quarter. After the first half, TCU led the game 31-27 and the scoring only continued to pile on.

After an exchange of field goals in the third quarter, TCU scored 10 unanswered points after a rushing touchdown by Trevorris Jackson and another field goal. Bryce Petty brought it within seven for Baylor after a passing touchdown, but then TCU scored two straight touchdowns on a rush by Aaron Green and an interception return for a touchdown by linebacker Marcus Mallet. The touchdown by Mallet gave TCU 58 points, beating the record for most points ever scored on the road against a top-5 team.

Petty and Baylor then took over the game after a Baylor rushing touchdown led to two more passing touchdowns for Petty for over 20 yards, making six for him on the day, tying it up at 58. TCU then made the gutsy call on offense to go for it on fourth down and three to go on the Baylor 45 with just over a minute remaining. TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin made an incomplete pass to Josh Doctson, leading to a turnover on downs. The ball was given back to Baylor who marched down using the run and the pass as well as timeouts to set themselves up for a 28-yard field goal that was pounded right up the middle by Chris Callahan.

The game totaled 119 points and was an instant classic for college football. We knew it would be a battle between to very skilled teams that had weaknesses on defense and that’s what we got. Bryce Petty was fantastic with 510 yards and 6 touchdowns to go with Baylor dominating 782 total yards on offense. For TCU, it was a less impressive stat line on offense with just 442 yards, led by the running game with four rushing touchdowns coming from three different players.

Baylor has locked up their first big win (if you don’t count Texas) of the 2014 season and are cruising into a college football playoff spot. They’ll take their 6-0 record to West Virginia next week.

TCU is not broken, they played very well against a talented team and will have a chance to continue to prove themselves starting next week against Oklahoma State at home.
