Boston Bruins continue with rough start to season as they fall 4-0 to the Washington Capitals

The Boston Bruins were a broken team until just mere days before the season began, and it’s seeming to show.

The team fell for the second time since winning their season home opener against the Philadelphia Flyers, this time getting shut out by the Washington Capitals in a 4-0 loss.

The game saw the Bruins outshoot the Capitals 29-21, but it also saw a physical team get just a little bit TOO physical. The Bruins spent a collective 25 minutes sitting out penalties, including a fighting major for Boston newcomer Bobby Robins. Milan Lucic, Dennis Seidenberg, and Brad Marchand would join Robins in spending some quality time in the penalty box; in contrast, the Capitals managed to amass only 15 PIM over the course of the game.

Alexander Ovechkin stepped up for his team in the first period, scoring twice on the Bruins within the first twenty minutes- once on the power play, and once with an even-strength shot that sped right past Bruins netminder Tuukka Rask. He was joined by Mike Green with a second power-play goal in the second period, and Joel Ward rounded off the Capitals’ scoring for the night towards the end of the final period for a 4-0 shutout victory.

The Bruins had all the technical skills, but none of the team effort out on the ice- they doubled the number of faceoff wins seen by the Capitals, but also had an increased number of giveaways and a miniscule number of blocked shots.

Should the Capitals continue to see such impressive leadership out of Ovechkin and the kind of spectacular play displayed tonight, the team could easily find themselves sitting pretty with a playoff spot by mid-season. On the other hand, should the Bruins continue to play the way they have over the past three games… things won’t look good for the Atlantic Division bruisers.
