The Colorado Avalanche have started off the 2014 season with two consecutive shut-outs, and not in their favor

On July 1, 2014, the Colorado Avalanche signed veteran winger Jarome Iginla to a three-year contract.

Iginla’s intent was to win a Stanley Cup with the Central Division franchise; the team had amassed an arsenal of offensive scorepower in recent seasons that the former Calgary Flames captain hoped would help lead him to his elusive championship ring. It seems, though, that the team’s offense has yet to show up for a game; the Avalanche have been shut out by the Minnesota Wild both games so far this season.

The two-game series between the franchises makes it difficult to assess if the shutouts are due to Minnesota’s monstrous talent this season, or if the Avalanche are simply off to a devastatingly bad start. The winning team has yet to start their number one goaltender; in contrast, Colorado’s Vezina-nominated netminder has posted poor save percentages in both matchups.

After the first game, Avalanche head coach Patrick Roy overhauled the top two lines, stating that the loss wasn’t due to a chemistry issue and that he hoped the switches would serve as a ‘wake-up call’. It didn’t work- the team lost 3-0 Saturday night, and remain scoreless going into their Monday night matchup against the Boston Bruins.

The Bruins could provide Colorado with their first win of the season, as the Atlantic Division powerhouse has struggled out of the gates as well with a 1-2-0 record thus far. If Iginla and his band of forwards- including powerhouse 19-year-old Nathan MacKinnon, 21-year-old captain Gabriel Landeskog, and staples Matt Duchene and Ryan O’Reilly- cannot find a way to put the puck in the back of the net, things will only get worse in the Rocky Mountains.
