Add second-year guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to the list of NBA preseason injuries that already includes Kevin Durant, Paul George and Bradley Beal.

This is quickly becoming Year of the Injury in the NBA. Detroit Pistons guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope suffered a left knee sprain in a preseason game against the Washington Wizards Sunday afternoon. After having to be helped off the court, his knee will be re-evaluated when the team returns to Detroit. Via Jeff Zillgit, USA Today.

After a rough rookie season, Caldwell-Pope was expected to take a step forward in his second year. He was having a good preseason, averaging 19 points per game and shooting the ball well. He  is competing with Jodie Meeks for the starting 2-guard spot, and looked like he had the edge before the sprain.

Now under head coach Stan Van Gundy, good outside shooters like Meeks and KCP should thrive in his inside-out scheme, especially if Andre Drummond takes a leap.

Caldwell-Pope was hurt after slipping on the court. He had 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting in 25 minutes before he had to be helped off the court.

In 80 games last season, he averaged just 5.9 points and 19.8 minutes per game while shooting 39.6 percent from the floor, including 31.9 percent from three-point range. While the severity of the injury isn’t yet known, the injury also hurts his prospects to win the job over Meeks before the regular season begins.
