Leafs’ James Reimer has his first starting game cut short with a head injury

James Reimer was given his first start of the season, but had it cut short early with a head injury.

More from New York Rangers

The Leafs’ backup netminder suffered a blow to the head during a collision with New York Rangers center Dominic Moore, and was subsequently removed from the game after deliberations with the team’s trainer.

Reimer was starting in net over the team’s number one netminder, Jonathan Bernier, who had let in five goals in the team’s matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins earlier in the week. Bernier let in one final goal for the Leafs before the final buzzer, resulting in the team falling from their blowout 6-2 lead to a 6-3 final score.

The Leafs are in dire need of a good season; after failing to qualify for the post-season once again last season, the Atlantic Division team is skating on thin ice in a die-hard ice hockey community. Fans have already expressed their displeasure at the way the season has started, even going as far as to throw jerseys on the ice just two games into the regular season.

The team walked away with a victory Sunday night, but not without the uncertainty as to what the situation in net will be going forward. Reimer had not been especially thrilled to rejoin Toronto after a disastrous collapse at the tail end of the 2013-2014, but was hoping to post positive numbers going forward.
