Last season, it looked like Steve Nash was at the end of the road.
He fought through multiple injuries and only appeared in 15 games for the Los Angeles Lakers. The 40-year old (who will be 41 in February) has discussed playing beyond the 2014-2015 season but now it looks like that won’t be the case.
“For me, this is my last year of basketball, most likely,” Nash said via Bill Oram of The Orange County Register. “So I’m not putting any pressure on myself other than to enjoy and to work as hard as I can. … To enjoy it for the last time is the goal.”
Despite that realization, Steve Nash actually feels good.
“It may sound frivolous over an 18-, 19-year career,” he said, “but to all of a sudden feel like you can’t get healthy and you’ve seen your last good game, was extremely difficult for me. … Having a few good games where I felt in control again really went a long way for me.”
If Steve Nash can stay healthy, it could go a long way towards the Lakers improving upon their dreadful 27-55 record last season. Of course, they will also need contributions from veterans like Carlos Boozer and Jeremy Lin and youngsters like first round pick Julius Randle. The health of guard Kobe Bryant will probably be the biggest factor in the Lakers’ success (or lack thereof).
Steve Nash played just 20.9 minutes per game. He averaged 6.8 points, 5.7 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game while shooting 38.3% from the field, 33.3% from beyond the arc and 91.7% from the free throw line last season. In his 18-year career, the 15th-overall pick of the 1996 NBA Draft has put up 14.3 points, 8.5 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game while shooting 49.0% from the floor, 42.8% from three and 90.4% from the free throw line.
