In need of a big hit in this game, the Cardinals got one from a familiar source. Once again it was Matt Carpenter coming through, giving his team an early lead in a game they must have.
It was an impressive piece of hitting from Carpenter. Giants’ starter Jake Peavy consistently worked underneath Carpenter’s hands during the infielder’s first two at-bats. He tried to go in there again, and Carpenter was ready. He turned on a fastball and sent it over the right field fence.
This is a classic example of a quirky postseason statistic that has emerged. In 162 regular season games, Matt Carpenter hit eight home runs. In six postseason games, he already has four home runs. His is just one example of a number of power surges in the St. Louis lineup as they seek another berth in the World Series.
