Kirk Cousins will have to be more consistent in coming weeks as the Redskins continue to dig themselves into a deeper hole

The Washington Redskins have spent the past two weeks looking like the unlucky recipients of a final score that didn’t necessarily reflect their overall effort.

The team fell to the defending Super Bowl champions two weeks ago on the road and then again to the Arizona Cardinals Sunday afternoon at the University of Phoenix Stadium. Late game plays by both Russell Wilson and Carson Palmer secured victories for the triumphant NFC West teams. In contrast, the Redskins were unable to finish strong under backup quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Kirk Cousins is a solid enough second string to prevent the team from sending out pleas for a Robert Griffin III replacement, after the starter went down with an ankle injury early on in the season. Cousins puts up good numbers, and seems to have a competitive enough play to hold his own in the league.

It may be because both Seattle and Arizona are dominant in the league this season that the Redskins lost. Both games were relatively close until the final moments; the team has seen significant improvement in their play since they fell 45-14 against the New York Giants in week four.

The difference between winning teams and losing teams in close games, though, is consistency. Wilson and Palmer have both proven to be far more consistent than Cousins, from the first quarter on and it will continue to hurt the Washington Redskins until either RGIII becomes healthy or the team’s second string can learn how to monitor his game. Passes must meet their intended targets, from the start of the game till the finish, or the 1-5 record Washington is sitting on will only continue to get worse.
