Final. 17. 51. 31. 42

The San Francisco 49ers started slow, but ultimately they were too much as they cruised to an easy 31-17 victory over the St. Louis Rams on Monday Night Football.

Austin Jackson and the St. Louis Rams charged out and took hold of their Monday night game with the San Francisco 49ers on Monday. They marched down the field for a touchdown drive and made it 7-0 in the first quarter. When they made the score 14-0 shortly thereafter, it looked like there might be an NFC West upset on Monday Night Football.

Those hopes were short-lived, and 24 unanswered points later, the 49ers had reminded the Rams which team was boss. The 49ers did have to fend off a last minute drive, but ultimately their 31-17 victory over the Rams was never in doubt.

Colin Kaepernick took the game over, starting late in the second quarter. The play of the game might have been this 80-yard touchdown to Brandon Lloyd. Set up by an iffy pass interference call, this long touchdown might have shifted the momentum away from the Rams to the 49ers for good.

As Davis continued to struggle to do anything on offense for the Rams in the second half, Kaepernick kept tacking on points. This ridiculous improvisational touchdown to Anquan Boldin made it 17 straight points and gave the 49ers their first lead at 17-14. They never looked back after this touchdown.

From there, the story of the second half continued: the Rams sputtered and the 49ers rolled. This touchdown to a wide-open Michael Crabtree stretched out the lead for San Francisco to 24-14.

To their credit, the Rams still didn’t go away. They kicked a field goal to pull within one score in the fourth quarter at 24-17, and managed to shut down enough 49ers’ running plays to give themselves one last crack at a tying drive in the final minutes of the game. Alas, it was not meant to be, as the game continued to get away from Austin Davis with this ugly pick-6 to seal the deal:

In total, Kaepernick threw for 343 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. In addition to that perfect game through the air, Kaepernick pitched in 37 yards on the ground. The 49ers no longer wear teams out with their rushing game; they no longer have to, at least when their quarterback chucks it around like he did on this night.

Davis ended up with 236 yards on 21-for-42 passing. He took five sacks and ended the game on that ugly interception.

Remember when the Rams rushed the passer with the NFL’s elite? Those were the days, right? 2014 has been a whole different story, and this was just another night with exactly zero more sacks for Robert Quinn or anybody else from the Rams’ pass rush.

St. Louis was on the wrong end of a couple tough calls in this game, but ultimately they lost to the 49ers because Kaepernick caught fire while they generated zero pressure and their offense went to sleep.

Once the 49ers took the lead, this one was never in doubt.

The 49ers are now 4-2 on the season. They play the Denver Broncos on Sunday Night Football in Week 7. As for the Rams, they are now 1-4. They host the Seattle Seahawks in Week 7.
