Alabama Crimson Tide tight end Kurt Freitag had his dorm room search after authorities were tipped off. That search turned up 112 grams of marijuana and $4,661 in cash.
According Stephen Dethrage of AL.com, the Alabama Narcotics Task Force were tipped off to a drug deal by a confidential information, which is what led to the search.
"They confronted Freitag and read him his Miranda rights, according to the complaint, and he gave agents permission to search his Bryant Hall dorm room, where they found 112 grams of marijuana and $4,661 in cash. The agents seized the drugs and the money, but if Freitag was charged with any crime, it is not reflected in court records.A spokeswoman for the University of Alabama said Monday afternoon that UA would look into the incident, but offered nothing further. A spokesman for WANTF and the Tuscaloosa Police Department declined to comment."
You can find the report from Alabama District Attorney Lynn Head here.
Obviously, this is a very serious matter and is likely magnified because of how players like former Texas A&M Aggies and current Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel and Florida State Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston have been under such a microscope over the last few years.
Of course, Kurt Freitag isn’t a Heisman Trophy winning quarterback and non-Alabama fans probably haven’t a clue who he is, so the story hasn’t blown up like it would if a more high profile player was involved.
Kurt Freitag was listed as a 3-Star tight end recruit in the class of 2012 and had a very impressive list of offers, including the Arkansas Razorbacks, Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators and Florida State Seminoles.
He has one career catch for 11 yards.
