The Boston Bruins and the Buffalo Sabres have one thing in common: an inability to score goals

Last season, the Boston Bruins finished first overall, taking home the President’s Cup trophy and coasting into the playoffs and were a significant favorite in the Eastern Conference. In contrast, the Buffalo Sabres finished dead last- 14 points behind the nearest team – and nowhere close to seeing post-season action.

This season, though, the two teams aren’t too far off from one another. They sit in sixth and eighth place for the Atlantic Division- Boston picked up a season opener victory over the Philadelphia Flyers, while the Sabres and Panthers have yet to record season wins- and each have some of the lowest goals scored in the league.

That’s right- the team with one Stanley Cup championship, two Finals appearances and a Presidents Trophy in the past four years… is currently tied in goals scored with the team many considered a non-threat last season.

It’s still early on in the 82-game season, so things have time to change. The Dallas Stars, who many favored to be a dominant force in the West this season, sit at the bottom of the Central Division without a loss to their names, either. Colorado, Florida, and the aforementioned Dallas all have fewer than four goals recorded, making them even weaker offensive threats than either the Bruins or the Sabres out of the gates.

For the Bruins, though, things need to turn around- and fast. The season’s first win was in overtime, and the franchise has tumbled into a three-game losing streak in the following matchups. Should things continue on this trend, they might be fighting the Sabres for the elusive Connor McDavid.
