Boston Celtics center Vitor Faverani had knee surgery in Spain and there is speculation he won’t be on the roster when he’s healthy in six to eight weeks.
Boston Celtics center Vitor Faverani was already recovering from knee surgery when he went to Spain to have the injured knee re-evaluated.
That led to surgery on Monday, according to the Celtics:
The 26-year-old Brazilian played in 37 games as a rookie for the Celtics, starting eight. He averaged 4.4 points and 3.5 rebounds in 13.2 minutes per game, shooting .435/.300/.649.
But he had problems with his left knee and spent a four-game stint with the Maine Red Claws in the D-League, where he averaged 19 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and 1.3 blocks in 32.3 minutes per game, shooting .540/.538/.789.
Sportando.com speculated Monday that Faverani may be the odd man out because of his injury.
Boston has 16 players under contract and will need to move one of them before the regular season opens.
The Celtics already have Jared Sullinger and Kelly Olynyk starting up front, with Brandon Bass and Tyler Zeller set to be the first two bigs off the bench. Additionally, the Celtics have former Heat center Joel Anthony on the roster.
Faverani is signed through next season and is set to make $2.09 million this year. His $2.18 million for 2015-16 is not guaranteed if he is waived before July 15, 2015.
