Detroit Tigers catcher Alex Avila suffered a concussion in Detrot’s Game Three loss in the ALDS, but despite it being his third head injury in the past two months, Avila has no plans to walk away in 2015.

Alex Avila’s head had a tough 2014. The Detroit Tigers’ catcher suffered a concussion taking a foul ball off his mask in the final game of the ALDS against the Baltimore Orioles, two concussions in September (one off a foul ball on September 2, another when he was accidentally tagged in the face by Cleveland Indians first baseman Carlos Santana on September 14), and another concussion earlier in 2014.

But, despite all of this, Avila said he has no intention of walking away from the game because of the injures, and claims he is now symptom-free.

“No,” he said when asked if he had any thoughts on retiring. “I’ve had three mild concussions in my career. I had a CT scan and an MRI checking my brain and my neck and the arteries leading to it, and everything checks out normal and healthy. And talking with the neurologist that examined everything, I shouldn’t have any concern. It’s like any injury — you have to let it heal 100 percent.”

Avila will play all of the 2015 season at age 28, and assuming the Tigers don’t bring in any other catchers to the mix, 2015 will be his sixth consecutive season of being Detroit’s starting catcher.
