Orlando Magic rookie Elfrid Payton isn’t regarded as a strong shooter, so maybe he should just try ally oop passes instead for now on.

After the Miami Heat won its third NBA title, Shane Battier talked about how he adjusted his shot by aiming a little to the left in lieu of completely altering his shooting motion. Sometimes that’s just what works best. Orlando Magic rookie point guard Elfrid Payton isn’t considered a particularly good shooter, so maybe he could take Battier’s strategy to the next level.

In the Magic’s preseason game against the Charlotte Hornets, Payton was looking to connect with fellow rookie Aaron Gordon on an ally oop but completely screwed up the pass. Like, in a good way. He ended up draining the three from Curry-range!

This was Payton’s first start in the NBA, and I would say it went quite well. Despite losing 99-97, Payton had 14 points on six-of-15 shooting, five assists and six rebounds in 31 minutes.

Payton certainly has a future as a strong distributor, defender and play maker, but he does need to improve his shot. Believe it or not, throwing up fake ally oops probably won’t work. Six-of-15, or 40 percent, isn’t a great percentage for your starting point guard. Payton has a bright career ahead of him, but he doesn’t want to fall into Ricky Rubio’s category.
